Delightful birthday treat @ San Francisco Steakhouse, Tropicana

Despite our plans for a lavish dinner (Oriental or ribs style) in conjunction with my daddy's birthday, we ended up doing none of the above.

We brought our dad to Tropicana City Mall and treated him to steak at the San Francisco Steakhouse instead; and yes, it was still one of his favorite meal to have.

The interior here was rather dimly lighted and the atmosphere was rather quiet and exuded a rather romantic feel, along with the strong sense of privacy.

We ordered a few main courses; and Daddy, being the birthday boy, was given the privilege to select his favorite item on the menu (of course, we do that too for ourselves ;)

We were also treated to a surprise complimentary birthday slice plus song from the friendly staff of SFS, led by their outlet manager, Mr Sean

Sean deserved a special mention here on my blog for his absolute fine eye for detail and hospitality to his customers.
He was extremely friendly and attentive to our needs.
We would also like to thank him for making my dad's birthday so memorable

Sean is in a pink shirt, unique from the rest of the staff since he is the outlet manager. He manages Satinni which is next door too.
(Hope his management took note of this post as well;)

It was overall a very pleasant dining experience, and the hospitality made it all the better.

San Francisco Steakhouse is part of the Tai Thong group along with the few other restaurants beside it and is easily noticeable when you are at the ground concourse of Tropicana City Mall.

Note: Pickyeater is in no way affiliated to the restaurant or the group and is only stating her personal opinion on her experience =)

East meets west with an exotic Balinese taste @ The Waterlily

Coming from a multi-racial country, we have been exposed to the myriad cultures and traditions stemming from the different races and religions. These cultures at the same time have also brought us their uniqueness displayed through their colorful costumes, beliefs, folklores and of course, tempting our palates with the distinguished styles of food as well.

Being Malaysians, we are no stranger to new and interesting food, in fact, more than anything, we are game to try almost anything that is new (unless it was some Fear-factor wannabes)
Perhaps it was due to this reason that we have opened our doors to different international cuisines which have set their foot (or outlet) in our homeland; Japanese, Korean, Italian, American, English, German, French, just to name a few of the prominent ones.

Of course, that does not exclude our fellow Asian neighbors; such as Thai, Indian, Chinese, Indonesian, Cambodian, etc.

Balinese food originates from Indonesia, and is one of the unique and most intriguing style of cuisine. Say Balinese, and I am immediately brought to think of the term exotic!

I have been reading so much about Balinese food in KL; and yet to try it, and so, when my colleague and boss suggested this place for dinner when I was in KL, I jumped (literally!) immediately at the idea =)

The restaurant which was introduced to me then was this, The Waterlily located at the Tropicana City.

It looked simple and was rather plain from the exterior, but once you step into the restaurant, it was like being transported to the land of Bali as it was filled with the unique and distinguished crafts and furnishings so familiar and popularized by most of our TV programmes and furniture concept stores.

The dim lighting and the soothing music in the background, not to mention their comfortable setting of the tables and chairs, really set you to a relaxing mood immediately after a hard day's work.

They offered a rather wide selection of dishes on their menu; and even include Western food!
I was warned that most of the in-house Balinese set dishes were rather huge for my consumption power, so I should consider probably the Western or even some light starters kind of meal to share around.

After a long and stressful day at the office, we were glad to revive our senses with their recommended Barli Limau (barley drink with lime).

Priced at RM16 per jug, it was definitely a refreshing drink and awakened our senses almost with immediate effect.

(If you were to order them separately, it costs RM8 for a glass like this)

Balinese Seafood with Rice set

Huge portion with rice, starter, appetizer and main all in one. It was pretty good, I guess as my boss just finished it in a jiff!

My Seafood platter (RM32)

The serving portion shocked me as well; as I thought ordering Western may be a wiser choice, and I was just so wrong as it was just as big (if not bigger) than the Balinese sets as well!
Do you feel there is a difference anyway, in the size?

Size aside, I have no other complaints about this as it was definitely different from the other seafood platters I have tried in other western restaurants.

There were huge prawns, cuttlefish, thick and tasty fish fillets, and loads of French fries.
At a glance, there does not seem to be much of a difference compared to usual seafood platters but when you take a bite into the seafood, it was specially marinated with a delicious and exotic taste of spices to exude that sweetness of the seafood itself.
It was really appetizing; and I loved how fresh the seafood were as well =)

The salad on the side also deserves a mention as they used a unique concoction of a sourish and spicy sauce and it went really well with the vegetables!
One of the best salad dressing I've ever had!

Alas, the same cannot be said for this Lamb Chop which was ordered by my poor colleague!
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
The lamb was so hard that he was contemplating to request to change to a butcher knife to cut into it.
He claimed that he was exhausted of his energy as he kept trying to drive the knife to tear the meat apart and yet, it remains unmoved.
Poor him, it was definitely one of the worst lamb chops he had ever tasted.

Side order; The Waterlily Satay (RM18)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
It was actually again, marinated fish paste with the spices and then placed on a lemongrass stalk which also lended its natural aromatic and tantalizing taste to the satay.

I was just happy that I've found another location for fish satay, and with such a unique and unforgettable taste =)

This place was not just a restaurant, but it was also a bistro and I guess it was pretty evident with the relaxing couches and tables placed around the place.

This was my first time attempting cuisine from our close neighbor, and I can't vouch for its authenticity or the quality compared to others (I have none to compare!). From my personal point of view, I must say it was indeed a mesmerizing experience and in such a lovely environment.

Room Eighteen, more room for homemade fishballs!

On my recent business trip to KL, I had lunch with my colleagues who brought me to Tropicana City Mall, to one of their usual haunts; Room Eighteen.

Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
I was new to this restaurant; but I do find that the exterior and style bear so much similarity to Canton-i!
Anyway, as I soon found out, they were actually another addition to the list of restaurants here belonging to the Tai Thong Group of Restaurants.
(Seriously, almost every food outlet/restaurant in TCM belongs to Tai Thong Group!)

It was not really crowded during that lunch hour but business was quite good, compared to the Delicious Nyonya restaurant next door (also part of Tai Thong Group) and we had a very pleasant and helpful staff attending to us; spelling out recommendations like she was reciting a poem from the menu.

Chinese Fried Rice

I think this costs about RM10.90+ and it was the first to arrive shortly after we placed our orders.
It was served hot and the steaming fragrant aroma which arose from this plate of simple Oriental Fried Rice just tempted our appetites and growling tummies.

Tasty, and it was well complemented with fresh and large shrimps which lended a sweet taste to the rice fried with eggs and barbequed pork.

I couldn't help myself from ordering the homemade fish ball noodles when I spotted it on the menu; as I always have a soft spot for homemade fish balls =)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
It came in a really huge bowl but the serving was reasonable. When I first saw that it was just plain wantan noodles with soup and whitish fishballs, I didn't think much of it, although I was surprised by the size of the fishballs.
When I took a bite into the fishballs (which I thought would be hard), I was not disappointed as it was uniquely made and it was definitely those hard frozen fishballs we take out of the fridge to cook in the noodles.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
The noodles were light to taste; not too soft nor hard, and just the way I like it.
The fishballs, I think it's just one of the nicest and well-proportioned homemade fishballs I have tasted =)
It is truly different, with a touch, yummy!~

Beef with Hor Fun was the set lunch for the day (Wednesday) and that was what my boss ordered (yup, I had lunch with my boss, and he was only one of my bosses who was rather kind and found it amusing that I love taking photos so much =p )
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
It looked rather oily to me, and my boss did not comment much, only a nod that it was pretty okay but not exceptionally good.

At the end of the meal, we had this special and in-house popular dessert which was recently created to suit the hot and humid weather out there.
Grass Jelly with sago in gula melaka (RM5.90)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

This was definitely a good choice for dessert; and do make sure you leave some room for it as it was really refreshing and cooling after one sip!
Grass jelly was definitely a good choice for cooling down and sago, which was made to be slightly sticky just brought out the sweetness and taste of the gula melaka which was blended with a light helping of milk.

Best of all, it's not too sweet too!~

It was a very enjoyable lunch; and the ambience was just right for a business or quiet chat with friends. I felt comfortable laying back on the chairs in the well-ventilated and air-conditioned room, while it was blazing hot out there.

Will I come back, oh yes, for the homemade fish balls and the dessert!
I just wonder why they call themselves Room Eighteen; any clue?
