Grilled Kurau @ Bee Hooi Coffee Garden

Who in Penang doesn't know Bee Hooi in Pulau Tikus?
It is like the most popular and overrated kopitiam on the island, somehow, compared to the other 10 kopitiam on the island selling the same old variety as well.

Bee Hooi, like others, offers the popular Lam Mee (or was it Loh mee), Char Koay Teow, Popiah.
On one of my recent visit, I was seated right in front of the western food stall and it is definitely not possible for me to ignore the menu signboard which listed their specialties.
To my surprise, the Grilled Kurau topped the menu.
Wow, I don't know about you, but I have almost never seen a western hawker food stall serve Kurau.
(Kurau was like the Jimmy Choos for the grilled fish sets in hawker stalls (the way the high class Jimmy Choo is for shoes, the kurau is the higher end fish for hawker western food stalls), no pun intended. I don't even know how did the Jimmy Choo come about:p)
Anyway, I decided to order it; being the fish-lover and furthermore, the price tag of RM7 is not too demotivating either

It appeared to be sliced so thinly that I can compare it to a manila cardboard and the latter would still win; in thickness

Hmmmm, still, I can't complain too much about a RM7 Kurau right?

When you're at a kopitiam, grilled kurau will not be all to order.
We tried the Pasembur as well (RM3)

This tasted rather good; and there lots of crunchy and fresh sliced cucumber and mengkuang

And the Or Chien here is good; or better than the rest we have tried so far.

Priced at Rm6, it had the perfect combination of corn starch, eggs and huge juicy oysters.
Not too starchy nor too omelette-like, it was really nice!

So, anyone who doesn't know Bee Hooi?
For those who does, what is your most-ordered whenever you're here?

This place may be slightly higher-priced compared to other kopitiam, but then again, this is Pulau Tikus, right?

Famous Char Koay Teow @ Pulau Tikus Market

Part 2 to the famous Lok Lok place is the equally popular Char Koay Teow here.
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com

The reason this CKT stood out among the rest in this land of Char Koay Teow was the ingredient which spun out from the conventional chicken eggs used in the frying process.
Instead, they used duck eggs in the CKT and voila, the plate of Char Koay Teow which costs about RM3.50 is irresistible to almost every Penangite I know

They do serve pretty scrumptious prawns, don't they?
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com

So when you are done with your plate, and you know this RM2 can't buy you a second plate, what do you do?
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com

You order a bowl of Leng Chee Kang, of course!~
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
Refreshing and definitely cool with the amount of 'rocks' in the soup, this is still not the best Leng Chee Kang i've ever had though:p

Are you tempted?
Make sure you have at least RM6 to enjoy the above:)

**Oh, and be prepared to share tables...the crowd gets to you sometimes**

Dip the skewer, LOK LOK

The Pulau Tikus market is well known for its line of hawker food stalls which took their place at sunset; after the retirement of the buzzing market hours in the morning.
One of the popular places for hawker food, this place offers more than just the usual Char Koay Teow, which by the way, is pretty famous here.

Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
The main attraction here; besides the Char Koay Teow is the Lok Lok; which practices the art of pushing food on a vertical skewer stick which you dip into the small little pot of boiling water like this

And then you dip it into a plate of sauce before it enters your o-shaped mouth.
There is often 2 choices of sauce in most Lok Lok stalls; the 2 typical ones found will be the peanut sauce and the chili sauce.

By the looks of this supposedly peanut sauce, it looks more like 'oil' in sauce

Their operation hours start from 6pm onwards and if you're there early, you stare at the empty plate with the baby fork

Or the empty table with these wooden board panels sitting on the table

Fret not, for within a few minutes...

Now you see it, earlier you didn't

And you are treated to this wonderful view of all the interesting food filling the plates on the wooden boards

So, if you're there even at 6.30pm, the crowd is already starting to flocking the place.

Bee Hooi Coffeshop

During my family's last trip to Penang during the CNY break; Dear and I brought them to sample some local hawker food that my family loved so much.
Bee Hooi in Pulau Tikus is one coffee shop opposite the Belisa row; which is no stranger to the locals in Penang - especially the residents in Pulau Tikus.

Bee Hooi is usually available at night; and the crowds flock the place starting from 8pm onwards where most of the stalls are open.
Bro's Char Koay Teow (RM3.50) with big prawns...although bro mentioned the plate of CKT was smaller than expected..hehe
*Penangites prefer smaller portions:)

This Char Koay Teow seems quite popular over there:)

Apom telur along the five-footway outside the coffee shop (5 for RM2)
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
Fluffy and thin; it was not bad as well

Fried Oyster or Or Chien (RM6)
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
This was only on the average; and the stall was not that popular among the regulars as well.
However, I find it not that oily and was pretty acceptable;)

For breakfast, Bee Hooi is also open once in a while on weekends and again, also another popular hangout for the locals.

Bro wanted to try out the Otak-otak (RM2)
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
It was not too bad; although I never did like coconut milk stuffs.....so bro, dear and daddy had most of it:)
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com

Again, Char Koay Teow....this was from a different stall which only operates in the morning...
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
Bro commented that this Char Koay Teow was only average compared to the night stall...

Coming from the same stall, the old lady sells Singaporean style of popiah in the form of Nyonya Pie Tee...5 for RM2
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
Not bad....nice mengkuang char:D

There's still plenty of food we have yet to try but so far, I find the place really popular and hugely favoured by the locals.
So don't forget to drop by to try this place....it isn't hard to find...just go along the road opposite the Belisa row; this is at the end of row with CIMB bank and it's next to the Klinik Luke:)
Let me know what you think then!
