Kaya Puff from Taiping

On our road trip to attend a friend's wedding in Taiping a fortnight ago, we were recommended this local produce which is quite famous in the little town.

Kaya puff; or also known as Kaya Kok in the local language is basically a type of crispy pastry stuffed with sweet kaya paste.
(Kaya is a type of jam made of coconut, eggs and sugar and is basically known to the locals as Coconut Egg jam. It is used as a bread spread too; and is an alternative to the fruit jam or butter)

It is best consumed when it was fresh from the oven!

I took photos of the house where this was produced, but as they told me not to take any photo after that, I will not be posting the photo of the place to protect their privacy:)

I forgot to take a photo of the filling, as hubby already took a bite and then finished it off :p

Kaya puff can be found locally in the markets, but they are famous in the state of Perak and two places that I know where you can get really good kaya puffs are in Ipoh and the above, Taiping.
Any other place you know?

Hailam Seafood, Lumut

On one of my recent weekend getaway in Damai Laut, I had an unfortunate experience whereby my plan to enjoy their seafood BBQ buffet dinner in their in-house restaurant was spoilt (to be shared in my travel blog), we ended up on the road searching for a decent place for dinner at a late hour.

It was about 30 minutes drive before we saw lights and we immediately settled for this roadside seafood restaurant which seemed to be beckoning to our growling stomachs!

This seemed like a family-run business and your typical local Chinese restaurant

They used their local brand of chili sauce, which seemed to taste pretty good!

We ordered coconut juice to quench our thirst
(somehow I always associate coconut juice with vacation=)

As for the dishes, these were what we ordered:
Kung Pow Mantis prawns

Deep fried threadfin with three tastes

This was recommended by the lady who took our order; and it was excellent (or were we just too hungry?)

Stir-fried brussel sprouts

Three dishes for the night which we enjoyed to every bite

Besides the great taste of their food, the prices came comparatively reasonable too!
Kung Pow mantis prawns = RM8
Deep fried threadfin = RM20
Stir-fried mantis prawns = RM8

Total bill came to less than RM40; coconut juices and rice included!

I guess it was a blessing after all to have missed that hotel BBQ seafood buffet dinner, or we won't have discovered this gem hidden in Lumut!

Too bad it was really late at night, but the directions are quite simple, when you came out of Damai Laut resort junction, turn right and just go all the way straight until you come to a traffic light (drive about 30 minutes).
Keep to your left and turn before you reach the traffic lights. If you missed it, just make a U-turn.

I hope that helps?

Tau Fu Fa!

Remember my frequent mention in my blog about a particular tau fu fa (beancurd custard dessert) in Ipoh that nowhere else can compete with and how fond I was of it?

Well, last weekend, on my way back from KL northbound, we stopped by Ipoh town and scouted for the little stall which we were unable to find each time.
Somehow, Lady Luck was on our side this time and after a few miraculous turns around the town area; we found it...

Yeah...we finally found it!!!:D

The little small stall...easily missed if you are not careful...

Funny Mountain..what a cute name...
Traditional soy bean drink and dessert! No wonder it's so nice...

Not that easily missed also; look at the number of cars lining up to get their share of the desserts/drink!!

Really popular:)

The streets leading to the stall; my landmark so that I can find it again the next time..haha:p

It's pretty near the famous Foh San restaurant....dim sum restaurant in Ipoh...I think only about a street away:p

Tau Fu Fa at last! RM1.80/Rm2 per box...

There was a bottle of soya bean drink also; I forgot to take the pic....think it costs Rm1.80/RM2 per bottle...

Ooo....the smooth texture of the beancurd awaits...

But look at the amount of sugar...

I think it has deteriorated a little (*disappointed) and it was too sweet:(
The beancurd itself is still smooth but lost the delicate touch..somehow, I just couldn't describe..but the savoury smooth and delicate taste as it touches the mouth...that is missing:(

Anyway, it is still not too bad...if you do drop by Ipoh, do remember to try this out:)

Yoke Fook Mun

I went down to KL last weekend for a short day trip to visit my uncle...if you have been reading my blog, you will know about my uncle:)
*Sorry guys, I had no time to meet up with all of you:(

Okay, we travelled pretty early and as usual, we will drop by Ipoh town for breakfast....for dim sum at one of our preferred restaurants:)

The famous prawn dumplings (Har Gao)...RM3.50...

Notice I used prawn and not shrimp:p They are really big and tasty:D
And the skin is just not too thick....this is how har gao should be!;)
Do it right and you qualify as a dim sum master:D

Fishballs....

Contains meat!! Yikes...luckily it was tasted before I took my bite...

And this is another prawn dumpling; the Har Mai (Rm3.50)

Also nice:)

It's an old running dim sum restaurant; pretty famous in Ipoh after Foh San (the old time brand for Ipoh folks).
If you come on weekends; expect to wait for at least 30 mins and also anticipate a hustle environment:p
