Are these Vegetarian Too?

It's finally Friday today, and usually on Fridays, Catholics observe the tradition of going meat-less.
For some of us (points to myself), that means going vegetarian and I am definitely not complaining about it.

I know I have already posted on vegetarian in my last post, and before I hear you groan "Not Again?", allow me to share these few photos for you to judge whether they are Vegetarian-like or not.

Braised lean meat with ginger and soy sauce
This tastes so chewy and good, and the spicy ginger just pumped up the level of excitement in this dish!

Fish in sweet and sour salad sauce (made of tomato ketchup mixed with chili sauce)
No need for me to elaborate further, that this is one of my favorites!:)

I am a fish fan; vegetarian or not!

Stir-fried broccoli and cauliflower with tau kua (beancurd), carrots, and mushrooms, and mock lean meat made of gluten wheat.
This is a simple yet crunch-worthy dish which I adore; and is definitely my all-time favorite veggie vegetarian dish.

Now, don't you think this look so similar to the real meat and fish?
Had I not mention it at the start of the post, would you be able to guess?

All these creative vegetarian dishes are not homemade by yours truly, but were bought from a stall in the market.
Most of these vegetarian dishes are made of gluten wheat, and for the fish, there is also seaweed involved.

Did I hear you now regret your groan? ;)
I promise you more exciting food next week, after we ALL enjoy our weekend (bloggers do need to take our weekends off too, sometimes:)

TGIF folks, and have an awesome weekend!!:)

Pasar Ramadhan in Mahkota Cheras

This is definitely an outdated post as Syawal is already here and our Muslim friends are happily celebrating the joyous Aidilfitri season.

This was about two weeks ago, I think about a week before Hari Raya when I went home and my parents brought me to the nearby Pasar Ramadhan.
I have never really been to Pasar Ramadhan, and I rarely go to morning or night markets as well but this time, I just wanted to write and blog about this festive market which seemed to be popping all over the country come the holy month of Ramadhan.
It was definitely interesting to explore and to blog about.

This was the small Pasar Ramadhan in Mahkota Cheras.

It was supposed to start as early as 4pm, but I guess we were still too early as there were still a lot of stalls not ready yet when I was there.

Anyway, a quick glimpse into what this Pasar Ramadhan had to offer

I think basically, anything you can think of, you can find it there, from the brisk walk I took through the market.
It was really a mouth-watering affair looking through the food ready on sale, and the friendly vendors just kept tempting you to their stalls.
I truly admire and respect their determination and spirit in keeping strong to their fast despite being surrounded by these aromatic food.

There were a lot of kuih muih and fried pastries stall in the market, and I have always been fascinated with the colorful variety of our Malaysian kueh, and I have to say that the Malays are one of the culinary experts in this arena.

This is like our Chinese kuih (rice cup cakes) used to worship the deities on 1st and 15th of the month, and the Mak cik was nice to explain to me that theirs differ in the sense that they use vanilla soda in making it rise.
Initially her cup cake was supposed to be white, or creamy beige in color but it was not appealing to the children, hence she dotted some red colors on the cakes to attract the children.

I haven't seen this in a while now, it used to be so popular among my friends back then in university days =)

It was quite hot, but I think it was a very educational experience for myself too =)

Christy aka Pickyeater would like to wish all the Muslim readers a very happy and blessed Hari Raya Aidilfitri!~

Fish Head Beehoon

The wet market in Kepong Baru is one of the busiest in the district; particularly during the weekends due to the variety offered to the busy working women and housewives alike to do their marketing.
Besides, raw vegetables, meat, seafood and fruits, there are also various hawker food stalls and coffeeshops in the market to feed the growling stomachs after a busy morning of marketing.
This particular coffeeshop is located at the corner; behind the Mobil petrol station.
The first stall sells fish head beehoon; cooked in milk (as practised in most fish head beehoon cooking style here in KL)

Ordering a bowl of fish head beehoon is based on the headcount per order.

Their servings are huge!
Or rather, as my dad was quoted; it was more of the large bowls used for serving the food:)

The serving of the beehoon and fish chunks are in abundance!

For a serving of 2 pax, it costs RM10 for this whole bowl

Not too milky nor too oily; it is not bad to start off with the day.

Pasar Malam food

Night market is a trend here in Asia; most of the countries have proudly carried this unique culture for street markets at night for cheap bargains and down-to-earth prices of lower-end products ranging from food to clothes for the society.
Sadly,I should say, nowadays, even night markets no longer boast of really discounted or cheap bargains.

Anyway, just a peek into some local night market food
Muar Chee

This is a delicacy made of glutinous rice; which were cubed and then sprinkled with peanuts.

This is a type of pick and carry food; where you snack upon.
My mummy loves this.
In Penang, they even sprinkled with fried garlic

Lok Lok; or skewer food can also be found in night markets; yeah, they are going mobile on franchise now:)

You can either choose to eat at the stall; or you can dip/cook and then take away with the sauce in a stereofoam box.

This is not the famous smelly beancurd(I CAN'T stand that!!)
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
This is just a normal fried beancurd aka Tau Kua stuffed with sliced cucumber

You dip into the chilli sauce or sweet sauce for condiment

I don't frequent night markets; but it's definitely a Malaysian or Asian culture to have all these brightly-lit stalls at nights near residential areas on a weekly basis:)
