Bitter Gourd Soup with rice by the road in JB

I wish I could tell you where is this place, but I am not sure of the place and I only know that my colleague stopped here on the way to the airport for lunch.
(The kind colleague offered to send us to the airport)

I was told that Bitter gourd soup is a pretty popular dish ordered in JB, and there are a few places famous for it.
Honestly, I don't fancy bitter gourd and it is one of the vegetables that I don't really like.

I did notice a lot of people having lunch at this rather shabby place by the roadside, and almost everyone ordered about the same type of dishes.

It was cooked with generous slices of bitter gourd with lean pork meat and I think there were liver too (Sorry, Pickyeater is not comfortable with that)
The soup was rather clouded, but I think it was due to the ingredients in it.

Roasted pork, another popular item here too.

Braised tau kua with fish fillet (thanks to my considerate colleague for ordering this especially for me :) despite me telling him that I am okay with the rest of the dishes. Thanks!)

I do not know the prices of the dishes but I heard it was reasonably priced.
Perhaps the locals in JB would know about this place?

Seafood feast @ New Lucky Seafood, JB

Deviating from my usual post on KL and Penang, I am bringing my readers to JB to this restaurant where my bosses treated us during our business trip there last two months.

We had our usual annual review meeting, and this year it was held in our JB office.
After a day long discussion and meeting, we headed to this restaurant; New Lucky Seafood which the bosses seemed to be rather fond of.

I only managed to capture most of the food; but at least I could provide the name of the restaurant yeah, this time, compared to my other makan trips in JB =P

Steamed Chicken, apparently this was one of the signature dishes here in this restaurant.

Stir-fried Cuttlefish with dried chilies (Kung Pow style)

Everyone joked that this is not a good dish to order during work/business meeting with the bosses, as in Chinese, it literally means "being sacked" (Chinese: Chow Yau Yu)

Steamed prawns with Chinese White Wine

The prawns were huge and fresh, and it was an appropriate way to serve them.
Me like! =)

Cod fish served in dual combo style

This is another favorite dish among everyone.
The delicate texture of cod fish was delicious in the steamed version and also juicy in the bites of the crispy version.

Warning; some disturbing exotic dishes to be served:

Steamed frogs with essence of chicken

Take note that Christy aka Pickyeater is not an advocate of exotic food like these, and she is in no way supporting these!

The last dish was finally something normal and edible for me

I do not know the actual idea of the total cost but I do know the bill came up to about RM1,000+ due to the alcohol ordered by the bosses and colleagues.
I think the food here is a little overpriced and it was quite average in taste.

That's my personal opinion, but I did hear that this restaurant is quite famous in JB, is that so?

A Wedding Dinner in JB

Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
Finally, I am posting the pics of the wedding dinner which I've attended in Johor Bahru - not to mention the horrifying experience which I've posted in my other blog

It was truly a great gathering, as I have met up with all of my good friends (some of them have gone on separate paths of career choice)
To cut the long story short, a glimpse into the nice spread of food served during the wedding dinner of this wonderful friend of mine

A little token of appreciation from the bride and groom for all their guests

(I think my friend personally made these little notes for all)

A bite courtesy from the restaurant

The first dish served was the Five Happiness

A tantalizing dish with a tasty variety

The base of the dish was actually made of jelly!

2nd Dish: The braised shark's fin soup with crab meat

3rd Dish: Steamed chicken

It may seem a little weird that they serve chicken in this style for a wedding?
According to all the guests, this was actually very well done - everyone enjoyed this delightful dish

4th Dish: Steamed pomfret

Wow, I rarely see this fish in such a big size and the first thing that came to my mind:
'Hmmm...so big, may not be too good'

Boy, was I wrong!
The fish was really fresh and the flesh was steamed to perfection - it was really tender and succulent

5th Dish: Double flavored prawns (Sweet and sour)

Yet another wonderful bite; and the best part, it was already peeled for our consumption.
(and to think my friend requested for a set of cutlery for this purpose~:)

6th Dish: The vegetable dish - Choice of asparagus stir-fried with scallops in spicy shrimp paste

Scallops and asparagus....need I say more whether it's good?

A nice little deco on the plate

7th dish: For some carbs, this is the lotus leaf rice

The last but not the least important dish, this proved to be the true winner of the night!
A combination of hot and cold cakes - the ones in white are wafer coating the frozen strawberries while the brownish ones on the lower front were the fried pastries

These delightful bites were served with a bowl of sweet red bean soup cooked with lotus seeds and sago

This was truly one of the most unique desserts I have tried at a wedding dinner!

Congratulations to my beautiful friend and her husband and this is a toast to their happy-ever-after wedding!

Pan Mee in Johor Bahru

During my trip to my friend's wedding in Johor Bahru (the one I couldn't make it to the pot luck bloggers' gathering, sorry!), I was introduced to this pan mee in town by my friends who used to study in Johor.

Warning: I am going to do a very blind-mouse introduction here on this pan mee due to the following reasons:
1. I didn't sleep at all the night before the wedding day upon late arrival at the airport
2. It's my maiden trip to Johor and I know nuts about the roads here
3. I was too busy chit-chatting and laughing to my friends' jokes to pay attention (it's been a while since these gatherings, you know)
4. I am not a big fan of Pan Mee
5. I don't come to Johor that often

So bear with me while I share with you the pictures and tasting experience.
The only information I can provide on the location is that it is located in the center of the town where there are lots of shops. (I know, lame kind of info)
The shop is specialized in Pan Mee, and I think in Chinese, they called it the specialized Pan mee supplier.
(Rings a bell somewhere, any Johorean bloggers?)

Alright, since it was a raved about pan mee in this region, each of us ordered a plate/bowl. You can opt for the soup or dry version.

There are also the different types of ingredients you can choose from the menu for your pan mee; i.e: spinach, turnips, etc

The dry version; with the flat pieces of pan mee
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

This is the thinner version and the pan mee slices are green due to the spinach ingredient used to make the noodle.

Taste wise, I found it on the mediocre side.
They favor the loading of the deep fried anchovies (ikan bilis) atop the noodles and according to my friends, the anchovies were actually their hot-selling addition to the noodles.
Personally, I found it rather salty though:(

The soup was pretty bland; but I have to say the portion was not just generous; it was humongous!
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
I would say it's pretty worthwhile for RM4 per bowl.

We ordered side dishes such as yong tau foo and fish fillets.
I forgot to take the pictures due to the chattering:p

Warning: Due to our huge group and we were split into 2 different tables, the restaurant took advantage of the situation and doubled our orders.
We were also at fault for talking too much and thought that the numbers of orders were correct.
However, we had a hard time finishing the food and started to blame each other for ordering too much.

The bill came to about RM130++ for our group of 11-12 pax.

I don't know whether this is the best pan mee in Johor, but it's definitely the most expensive to me!

**By the way, is there any Johorean bloggers who can confirm on this shop?
I just realized that I don't recall any Johorean flogger here....correct me if I am wrong.
Hmmm, just a thought...just a thought, maybe we can arrange a trip to Johor one day...hehe, what do you all say, floggers?
Just a thought though....
