~~*Happy Chinese 'NIU' Year 2009 from Christy*~~

Sorry for the lack of updates lately; it has been a pretty hectic month for me – travelling, health, and shifting to a new place. I had to temporarily survive without internet connection which has made updating my blog a little out of the way for the time being. Work is also again, consuming my time too.

Anyway, Chinese New Year mood is in the air and I am sure most of us will be busy with family reunions, homebound traveling (like yours truly) and catching up with relatives and friends

I will try to update as much as possible over the next few days with the Internet connection at home and before I start getting busy with all the photos and family gatherings which I shall share after my little festive break 

Stay tune and wishing you and your family a very Happy and prosperous ‘NIU” Chinese year 2009!~~

I bet I'd have more celebration if it wasn't for the unfortunate dry throat:p

Thanks to everyone for the lovely wishes and the cakes!~

My Birthday Celebration @ The Ship

My favorite time of the year; after Christmas (that is) is of course the very day that belongs to me and me alone!

It was such a lovely treat to be able to celebrate with my family back at home and coincidentally it was also the birthday of my ex-boss, colleague and a good sista-pal of mine:)
Wow, and to add to that, another gal pal of mine also got hitched on that very day this year...haha, so you can imagine how eventful it has been!:)

I had a treat from my bro and of course mummy and daddy at The Ship for lunch
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
They have already put up the CNY deco to usher in the New Year:)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

It was such a cool escape from the scorching hot sun out there!
The dim lights were not too kind to the camera though:p

There were set lunches available at RM13.90++ with a daily option of 2 main courses, a drink and a dessert.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
The sets are different on each day; so refer to the menu:)
On that day (Saturday), it was either Black Pepper Steak or Seafood Fried Rice.
The Seafood Fried Rice was actually not too bad; and my mummy enjoyed it
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

The Black Pepper Steak, on the other hand, was not up to the expectation.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
According to them, the meat was rather coarse and definitely not tender.

As for me, I had the Seafood Platter (RM33.90)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
Frankly, I was kinda disappointed with the quality of this as I was expecting a really nice platter of fish fillets, cuttlefish, tiger prawns.
Well, this platter does contain them and also my fave scallops (one of the main reason why I ordered it in the first place) but I found the taste slightly below average.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
I think I still prefer the Seafood Platter at Victoria Station:p

Dessert for the day was guess what?
Papaya; a few slices of them on the plate...hahahah:)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

Overall, I just find the quality of The Ship has plummeted over the years and it's kinda disappointing as I've always liked them.
Anyway, another unfortunate thing happened whereby I fell sick on my birthday...sighs; after lunch and dinner was, needless to say, had to be postponed since I had to have something plain and simple... *Groans*

Anyway, thanks to my wonderful bro and family for making it a beautiful day for me!~

Western Food @ Tanjung Tokong

If you feel like having decent western food and yet not paying a bomb for all the frills, there is always the option of dining at food court or hawker stalls.

Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
Along the road from Mount Erskine, there is this particular western food stall located by the roadside.

You should be able to see it on your right after a temple on your left and this stall is right in front of a residential flat.

This is one of the popular budget western food which serves pretty decent food and it has definitely been blogged about several times by most of the Penang floggers.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
I have heard about the crowds at night and therefore, I decided to be there early.

Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
They have drinks just like the ones you can find in any normal coffee shop.
They also sell jelly in cups which you can buy for RM1.30 per cup for your dessert.

Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

You can also order a bowl of mushroom soup for RM2.50 right in front of the stall.
They will serve it to you in a bowl size of a curry mee.
Orders must be made at the front stall as they will not come over to where you are sitting to take your order.
The menu is right in front and located above the cooking area; so it's kinda impossible to miss it.

BBQ Fish (RM7.50) was served in a rather sizable amount for a person
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
In fact, the sauce was quite unique and appetizing with a tinge of pepper and spices.
Not too spicy and not too plain.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

Grilled Fish (RM6.50) appeared to look rather bland and unappetizing but the fish was fresh and succulent
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
You can spread out the tartar sauce to add the taste to the fish
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

That was an overall first impression when I first went there.
However, I must say that the quality was not so consistent and the same dish was so different in taste!
Grilled fish on our second visit was rather dry, small in portion and really oily!
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
Kinda disappointing, but I guess it's due to the huge crowd.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
The oil made our throats rather uncomfortable.

For a bit of poultry, there are also a list of options:
Hawaiian Honey Chicken (RM7.50)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
The chicken breast portion was used and it was grilled and marinated before serving it with honey.
Taste wise, it was on the average; nothing to shout about (as commented by the person who ordered this)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

Chicken Maryland (RM8) was rather astonishing in its presentation
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
Maryland is usually served in a deep fried with golden brown crusted bits but this looks like a normal breakfast set you get at coffee shops.
Nevertheless, it was something different although the taste was rather dry and bland.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

For some kickin' and different tastes which you might wanna try,
I find the Indiana Fish (RM6.50) rather unique and in fact, it is one of the most interesting style I've tried:)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
The sauce looked a little like the one served with the BBQ Fish but this was slightly sweet, sourish and a tinge of spiciness in it.
A really interesting and appetizing concoction:)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

Thai Spicy Fish at RM7 was also pretty enticing when it arrived as it was served with lots of sliced onions on top of it (beware, for those who are not fond of onions).
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
It looked rather fiery spicy and if you are expecting Thai-tomyam-spicy like, it's not so much the case.
It's not that spicy although it was rather exciting to the taste buds as well; I'm not sure how do I put it; but it's worth a try if you want to know what I mean:)

If you arrive at the peak dinner hours, take note that you'll definitely have to wait and you will be given this little small plate on your table indicating your turn.
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
However, do also take note that the numbers do not go in chronological order; I am amazed how do they keep track of the orders!

Well, as long as it works for them, we shouldn't bother anyway:p

In my humble opinion, the prices here are pretty reasonable and affordable for western food and the serving was rather proportional to the price we're paying.
Yeah, quality may be a little inconsistent; but what can you say for the price you're paying:)
No frills are expected; as the tables are just plain plastic tables by road stalls - so you can't expect any candle lights and checkered table cloths or waiters in suits attending to you *winks*

Bangkok Lane's Mee Goreng

When you bring up the topic of Mee Goreng, it is a common term to link to our local mamak stalls in Kuala Lumpur.
However, if you are in the Pearl of the Orient, most Penangites will immediately tell you about the Mee Goreng in Pulau Tikus; or more precisely, along Bangkok Lane.

The stall resides in this coffee shop located strategically along the main road (the same road to the police station and facing the market)
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing

The coffee shop was pretty crowded during the afternoon; with local tourists and locals themselves who flock to the shop to get a taste of the famous mee goreng.

What amazed me was the fluent way these Indians speak in Hokkien when communicating with us on the drinks order!

We had to wait for a while for our noodles to be served; so we quenched our thirst with the herbal tea, lime juice and coffee that we ordered

The Mee Goreng finally arrived!
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
It looked too red to me! Like it was filled with some major coloring agent:p

Squeeze the lime juice into the noodles to eat it the Malaysian way!

We took a bite each
Image Hosted by PicturePush - Photo Sharing
Ermmmm, honestly?
I don't get what's the rave all about as it is just plain average.
I think some Mee goreng tasted better.

I am not sure, but I think it was just like some plain noodles tossed into the wok to fry and fry, and it still lacked that ooomph (or you guys call it the 'Wok hei'?)
Mum says it's probably due to the large amount of noodles that he's cooking in the wok; just like people cooking at a huge function using those BIG woks.
The tastes will not be evenly distributed; or something along that concept.

No offense, I guess it didn't really suit our taste buds despite the fantastic reviews or raves we've heard.

My Christmas Feast ~~ (Part 2 - Dinner)

(Continued from Part 1)
**Do bear with the pictures as the atmosphere was rather smokey and my sensitive eyes felt like it was clouded most of the time:(

Christmas Dinner was celebrated over the Town's Steamboat; All You can Eat for RM19.90
I have wanted to bring my family there since the first time I was there; and Christmas seems to be a good time to introduce to them the steamboat which has been the talk of the town.

Boy, was it crowded when we were there!
We were so fortunate to be able to get a table!
The rule here is to pay before you can start; and they do have discounts for children and also senior citizens.
Once you have paid, clip the receipt to the hose connected to the gas tank
