Eating in Kepong

Eating out can be a hassle sometimes; especially when deciding on where to eat.
It is even more head-wrecking when with your family and everyone's cracking their head to think of the choice suitable for all.

One of the affordable and nice places for "choo char" is in the smaller neighborhood of Jinjang and Kepong area.

Yam Chicken; it was a rather unique dish with deep fried mounds of yam served on top of the marinated chicken pieces dipped in sweet and saltish gravy.

This is one of the old-time favorite; Teppanyaki prawns or Sweet and sour prawns served in sizzling hot pan.

Homecooking - Duck and Vegetarian

Another post to boast of food at home!

Roasted duck....hmmm, somehow it's pretty popular at most Chinese homes...and it's not really that cheap either; it costs about RM30-35 for a whole duck.

Assam fish is an appetizing option; and this is no ordinary assam fish.

This is a type of vegetarian fish cooked in assam gravy; which was really interesting and good appetite opener:)

Koo Loo Yoke (Sweet and sour pork) - again, this is just a mock version in vegetarian!

Happy Food Court

Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
Hawker food and open food courts are label brands carried proudly by Asians and definitely top the list for Malaysians. Stalls and food courts are growing everywhere in all areas.
Metro Prima is one of Kepong's most happening place and the Happy Food Court which was located strategically next to Carrefour and opposite Jusco added to the bustle.

There are more than 20+ stalls in this food court; selling an assorted variety of hawker food.
Lam Mee is one of our local food which was made famous in Penang.

It is basically some thick yellow noodles cooked in clear soup broth with some chicken slices, mushroom, shrimps and vegetables.

Popiah is made of a thin layered roll stuffed with healthy cooked vege rolled into it.

Grilled food never fails to gain a spot in any food court and the typical ikan bakar remains the local favorite.
For a twist, the grilled sotong (squids) is not a bad choice as well!

And a refreshing bowl of Leng Chee Kang or Lotus seed soup will always be a great option to cool off those spicy food!

Lunch @ Shook, Starhill Gallery

Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
I was in JWW Marriott for a conference last month and we had the luxury of having lunch in this exclusive restaurant located on the lower ground of Starhill.
They serve a variety of cuisines here; from Chinese to Western and of course, the unique combination of both or termed as fusion (cross of different cultured cuisines).
There were 3 choices available for our set lunches; there's the chicken, beef and of course fish.

Our appetizing Prawn salad

I opted for the fish; cooked in curry style and served with white rice

It was quite appetizing and a really enticing dish; although I am still wondering why serve with rice...hmmmm

Tiramisu for desserts seem to be getting popular these days; I have lost count of the number of places I have been to which served me tiramisu as the last resort..I meant, the last dish for dessert.

Isn't it obvious I am no fan who appreciates tiramisu?:p

It was a really nice place;

Desserts @ Low Yat Plaza

Low Yat is well-known as the IT/Digital Media hub in the heart of the busy streets of Kuala Lumpur.
However, all the way below all those busy exhibition lies the food court which houses the food providers for the tenants in this mall and also the shopping patrons.

There is this particular stall opposite Baoz that sells local delights and light snacks.

Toast bread with kaya was one of the delectable delights and is always a named favorite among locals dating all the way back to the kopitiam (coffee shop's popularity) era.
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com

They serve a variety of local desserts as well; priced reasonably at RM2.20

It is a pretty popular spot among the patrons; and is easily spotted when you are in the food court.
Prices are pretty reasonable too; it is definitely worth a second visit!

Asia Cafe @ 1 Utama

Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
The lower ground floor of 1 Utama; between the midpoint of the new and old wing is home to a few restaurants and cafes for quick bites in an oriental environment.
One of them is the Asia Cafe which seems to attract a crowd to their daily specials.

The interior was fashioned ala the old coffee shop style with the wooden tables and chairs/benches and the lamps hung from the ceiling; emitting the dim lighting to the entire shop.

They offer a nice selection of drinks; from herbal tea to simple Chinese tea to a few named local desserts.

This is the chrysanthemum with pear (RM3.50)
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
A rather refreshing drink in such a unique combination. I am sure it is meant for cooling effects as well.

Soursop snow; with 3 colorful blends of jelly-like sago adorning the dessert which was served with sweet soursop (RM5.90)
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
It was a little plain and small in serving; and there is nothing much special about this.

Swaying away from their named specialties (Sang Har Meen), this Tomyam Goong was also on their menu.
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
Served in spicy tomyam soup with seafood and oyster mushrooms, this blends well with the plate of white rice.
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
The tomyam was a little below expectation though.

Another thing worth mentioning was the fact that this restaurant/cafe was pretty slow in serving.
The deep-fried salted calamari which was ordered as the appetizer came in after the main course.
Hosted by RockYouPhotos.com
The taste was rather unappetizing as well.

I am not sure whether I will pay another visit though; as this is only my first visit and I did not try their special Sang Har Meen which they boasted in their main menu.
Perhaps another time...any thoughts from the rest of you?
