Eat, of course, and eat was what my friends had intended to do on their trip during the Labor Day weekend, while, I, was the appointed unofficial tour guide :-)
After 3 hours of drive along the North-South highway, it is of course inviting to have a refreshing bowl of Cendol from the famous Penang Road Teochew Cendol
1. Penang Road Famous Teochew Cendol
As usual, it is crowded; what more on a long weekend like Labor Day?
Tempt the taste buds and cool the throat with a bowl of shaved ice immersed in heavy gula melaka syrup and red kidney beans and green cendol (RM2.20)
It is definitely a cooling treat from the hot weather!
For a light snack in the late afternoon, it is convenient to proceed to the adjourning coffee shop; which is just next to the famous stall.
2. Joo Hooi Coffee Shop
The fresh aroma of the Assam Laksa at the back of the shop is enticing; and how could one resist a bowl of the authentic Penang Assam Laksa?
We had to park quite far from the stall and coffee shop; and turning back to Kimberley Street where we stumbled upon the famous pancake stall (known as Ban Cheng Kueh in Hokkien)
3. Ban Cheng Kueh in Kimberley Street
I blogged about this in a previous post; the famous one but with an attitude.
For RM0.80 per piece, it is an appetizing and yet light snack for the afternoon; if you ignore the calories of the groundnuts :-P
Do remember not to put it in the bag when it's still hot; otherwise it will turn out soggy when you are ready to eat.
After a short rest and all freshened up, the gang proceeded for dinner.
4. Song River along Gurney Drive
Eager to share the nice otak-otak and some light rounds before their hawker fare at the hawker stalls later, this was the first stop.
The otak-otak gathered praises and compliments from everyone; as the unique taste was detected in this delicacy which contains traces of fresh fish meat within the aromatic package wrapped in the banana leaves.
It was truly different from others; and is one of my favorite.
A thin version of the Swine bread; this tempted everyone's palates as they reached out for more of this.
5. Gurney Drive Hawker Centre
I seldom recommend this place to my friends or to any tourist; mainly because I don't find anything good in particular over here.
In fact, I find this place overrated and too commercialized and do not really have anything authentic.
Anyway, due to the request since this place was on the Penang map, it was included in the itinerary
A bowl of Assam laksa
